The WBA Aachener Werkzeugbau Akademie GmbH is the leading partner of the toolmaking industry in the fields of industrial consulting, further education, and research. In its own Werkzeugbau, WBA depicts the entire process chain of tool manufacture and develops innovative solutions for the industry with more than 80 member companies. As a platform for toolmaking and as a competence center in the production technology cluster on the RWTH Aachen Campus, the WBA provides the link between science and industry.

The WBA Aachener Werkzeugbau Akademie is located at the RWTH Aachen Campus – Here, real orders are processed at the WBA-Demonstrationswerkezugbau under deadline, quality, and cost pressure. The research environment is used to try out new organizational concepts and innovative technological developments, to present them to a wide audience, and to optimize them. Different technologies, systems and tools are used, such as CNC milling machines, die-sinking and wire erosion machines, lathes and grinding machines, thus covering the entire tool production chain. The aim of the WBA-Demonstrationswerkezugbau is to optimize the entire tool production process. In the long term, the goal is to achieve data singularity through IoT, digital networking and real-time location data. Information transfer as well as processing and process initiation are (partially-) automated.

The WBA-Demonstrationswerkzeugbau produces a wide variety of components for tools and other workpieces. After partial production, these are temporarily stored in crates and Euro boxes (KLTs) and must then be transported to the next production step, stored or prepared for dispatch. To make the process measurable and traceable in real-time, the boxes are equipped with INTRANAV.RTLS TAGs. Via the INTRANAV.IO RTLS IoT platform the position data are digitized and visualized as a Digital Twin.
You can see in real-time which production orders are being completed on which machines, which production pieces are located where on the production floor, and where for example, current traffic jams or interruptions are appearing. With the real-time overview, bottlenecks can be identified and eliminated immediately by taking the necessary steps. As soon as INTRANAV is linked to an ERP system, the platform can also act automatically on a higher level through if-then scenarios.
Zones (geofences or virtual zones) trigger automated ident-bookings as well as any other defined processes by connecting to ERP/EWM systems. You also receive fully automated feedback from logistics and production steps. Individual production steps can be also booked automatically and scannerless in the system (Auto-ID), like replenishment supply, thus the current production status is recorded, which also enables the implementation of the paperless factory and production.
